European Paper Wasp

The European Paper Wasp - (polistes dominula) is considered to be an invasive species, it first appeared on Vancouver Island in 2004 and has quickly spread through-out Southern B.C., doing serious damage to fruit and berry crops and vineyard production wherever it takes up residence. As this wasp type is recognized to be a non-indigenous, aggressive, and invasive species we recommend that you contact a pest control professional to have the nesting site destroyed to prevent it from further expanding it's range within B.C.

Although similar in appearance to one of our Native Paper Wasps and some native Yellow Jacket Wasps, the European Paper Wasp has some distinctive features that can be easily recognized which help to confirm it's identity. Our native Yellow Jacket species have all black antennae,while the European Paper Wasp has black and orange coloring on its antennae.The European Paper Wasp has longer legs and a narrower waist as compared to our native Yellow Jacket Wasp's bodies, but not the tiny, almost unattached waist of our Native Paper Wasp's body.
